Powder House Day
May 4 @ 10:45 am - 12:15 pm
Join the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard after their ceremony at City Hall where they will march back to the original site where Benedict Arnold demanded the keys to the Powder House at the old Beers Tavern, now Ordinary (old Richters). The Foot Guard will be handing over documents to the bar owners as part of their ceremony. Inside the oldest bar in town, where presidents, actors and musicians have sat, view a timeline history of the site and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat. The New Haven Museum will be there to share information as well. This event is family friendly. Please help spread the word!
Powder House Day celebrates Benedict Arnold and the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard who, in reaction to British attacks on Colonists in Massachusetts, were the first signed, organized unit to rebel against the British at the start of the Revolutionary War in 1775. The Foot Guard marched to the Beers tavern where the Town Selectmen were gathered, and demanded of them to turn over the keys to the Powder House, where gun powder was stored. Benedict Arnold, the captain, was handed the keys and the troop marched to Boston.
